Another Pit?

Use this forum to post images of Ferndale, old and new. I don't have the capacity to allow users to post images directly to the forum I'm afraid so you'll have to host them somewhere else.

Take a look at this photo and notice the winding gear near North Rd.

Doesn't the chimney next to it tally with your photo of rear North Road, pic 9 here perhaps these are the remains of Ferndale No 2 or 4 ?? These old pits were wrecks when we were toddlers! and those allotments haven't looked so pristine since food came off the ration!

Perhaps a bit further down than the No 2 & 4 collieries which came and went within the last century - this map dated 1898 seems to show a winding house in what is maked as "lower fan pit".

I'm no buff on old pits.

You could be if you could "overlay" this map to todays.
