Another Pit?

Take a look at this photo and notice the winding gear near North Rd.

Doesn't the chimney next to it tally with your photo of rear North Road, pic 9 here perhaps these are the remains of Ferndale No 2 or 4 ?? These old pits were wrecks when we were toddlers! and those allotments haven't looked so pristine since food came off the ration!

Thats right John but the old one dates from 1909 (I think)

Perhaps a bit further down than the No 2 & 4 collieries which came and went within the last century - this map dated 1898 seems to show a winding house in what is maked as "lower fan pit".

I'm no buff on old pits.

You could be if you could "overlay" this map to todays.
