Another view of the Strand, Ferndale

Postby mochyn » Sun Nov 28, 2010 9:19 am

This was posted in 1919. Note the cross (bottom right) and the line that says, "This is where I stood to see the Prince of Wales pass." Anyone know anything about his visit to the Rhondda?

As for the buildings on North Road, when were they all demolished? The shop with the curved front isn't there anymore is it, nor the old school or the couple of shops in between?

That shop on the curve was Davies the Booksellers, more relatives of mine. The shop window on North Road was a part of the shop as was the window next to the curved one. It was a stationer's, bookshop, and toy shop and had a model railway in the window at Xmas. They were a large family and lived above the shop. It must have been demolished in the 1970's or 80's - anyone else know?
The school I think is the same as in the other photo of North Rd.
I wonder how many Royals have gone past this corner? We all stood in the front garden of my Grandmother's house to see the Queen on her coronation tour.

Yes, I'm sure that's the same school, opposite Nancy's house. I've another good one coming up too, also showing the wall of the same school again with a flippin' great big "Welcome arch" built right over the road. Watch this space.

Here's a link of the 1919 Royal visit -

and there's 2 photos on this page of the P of Wales visit in 1919 so I assume he 'did' both valleys. I was born in Glyncornel by the way, it was the maternity part of Llwynypia hospital but on the opposite side of the valley -
