Who remembers the Carnival day centred on Darran Park one summers day every year? It was quality marching accompanied by Drum and pipe with massed kazoos - all sorts of uniforms:- Guides, wrens, page boys, scouts and sailors - amazing number for our small valley They mustered from early morning and played and marched beyond exhaustion leaving the park and going through every street peeling off one by one until only 4 or 5 were left.
The last sports event was usually the tug-of-war competition which left honour confirmed or wounded, in equal measure, and a sports field all churned up with mountains of red clinker. Remember that? - it was years before they could afford real turf.
So who's got some pictures then? Colour would do it justice but who could afford a colour camera in the fiftes? and by the 60's it had lost the wow factor.
